How to Play Cryptic Crosswords

Cryptic crosswords present clues that contain both a straight definition and wordplay. The definition usually appears at the beginning or end of the clue, while the wordplay provides an alternative path to the answer.

Common Clue Types

  • Anagrams – Look for indicator words like "mixed," "broken," or "confused"
  • Hidden answers – The solution is concealed within the clue text
  • Reversals – Words spelled backwards, signaled by "back" or "returns"
  • Double definitions – Two different meanings for the same word
  • Containers – One word placed inside another

Scoring System

Your par score represents the expected number of hints for a clue of that difficulty. Use fewer hints than par to earn bonus points. The game tracks your progress across daily puzzles and archives your results.
